The Controversies Over New Animal Welfare

Pigs have always had the instincts to look and root for food no matter where they are living. Kristina Horback is a professor in animal science she is studying how pig behave. She is trying to make the ways that pigs live better. At this time and even more in the future people are starting to care how the animals they eat are treated. Currently most pigs are bred to live in close, tight crates. However, people are starting to experiment with open pig housing so that pigs have more space to roam. In a study conducted it found consumers are willing to to pay 34 cents more per pound if the pigs are not housed in crates. The conclusion that Horback came up with was to have the pigs to stay in creates the first few weeks of life but then allow them to live outside or live in larger enclosed structures. People want pigs to be able to live in the happiest way possible just like how we now have free range chickens.
When these ideas are put in place our cost for pork meat will most likely increase in the near future. However, we will know that pigs will be not be confined in cages. Some people may not agree with having extra charges on meat products just for the new living arrangement but the caring for the well being of our animals will be greatly increased. For the pigs this new way of living would be a great change for them. Pigs will be able to use their instincts again to look for food and roam.

Talk About Protecting Fish of the Sea
8/31/17

There is now talk between Nations about protecting fish of the high seas. The United Nations have been having talks for the past two years on starting treaties that would create areas of protected marine life. Nations leaders have realized that the worlds oceans are not being protected from harm. However, other Nations are not for creating restrictions in the high seas because they go to fish for tuna or to catch krill fish. India and China are even going into international water to get valuable minerals. There are many questions regarding the negotiations and the treaties. How the protected areas in the ocean will be enforced? How much of the ocean will be protected? The new treaty negotiations could begin as soon as 2018. The treaties could help protect vulnerable fish that need protection to reproduce and grow in numbers. There is evidence that protecting the marine ecosystems can help populations deal with climate change.
This new information is important because it could be protecting up to 30% of the high seas and the marine life within the ocean. We need to advocate for this treaty to be written because it will help stop and restrict marine life from being killed. However, with the protection of marine populations some multi-billion dollar businesses will be forced to stop. Businesses that go to the high seas to catch fish that are sold for luxury dining will no longer be able to do so. But this treaty is more important than money because it is supposed to help repopulate and protect the marine life. I found this article interesting because I did not know that parts of the ocean could be protected by the United Nations.

Hurricane Irma has struck the Caribbean with heavy rains and up to 185 mile per hour winds. Irma, a category five hurricane, has left islands with flooding and mass wreckage. It has been reported on Wednesday afternoon Irma has created a new record of sustaining winds of 185 miles per hour for a straight twenty-four hours. The storm has already directly hit Barbuda, St. Martin, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and St. Barthelemy. Luckily, Puerto Rico did not sustain much damage but did leave 70% residents power. In many of the other islands the power is down, roads are uncross able and entire buildings have been diminished. So far at least five confirmed deaths have been reported from the Caribbean related to Hurricane Irma.
This storm has already showed its capability of destruction and is now headed toward Florida. The governor of Florida and President Trump have issued mandatory evacuations for Florida to help keep the people safe. What the officials are saying is important because they have an idea of what is headed toward where millions of people live. People in Florida have seen what happened just a few weeks ago in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey and have started to prepare for the worst. This storm could hit Florida and create billions of dollars of damage as well as claim many lives. Stay safe Florida!

Getting Power to Florida Could Take WEEKS

After Hurricane Irma hit Florida thousands of power lines were hit causing over 15 million people to be without power or electricity. It takes a long to restore power due to the multiple step process. First crews have to be sent out to see the damage done and figure out the best way to restore the power. The crews can come across many problems that can slow down the process down. Some examples are floods damaging the lines or trees that have fallen. Then after the damage is surveyed the buildings with power have to be turned off so that explosions do not occur. This process could last weeks depending on the amount of damage and flood waters.
Florida Power and Light was expected to send out about 16,000 workers to help restore power. They will first try to restore power in critical places such as hospitals and large cities before moving to smaller towns. With this extensive process and all the damaged power lines residents in Florida have a while to wait before power is restored. With out power people are not able to have air conditioning in the heat or have access to internet.

Are Scientists Able to Choose Butterfly's Colors?

We all thought only nature could color a butterfly's beautiful wings but we are wrong now. It was announced on Monday that scientists have found a way to control the first few steps of coloring the wings. Scientists have found that the wings colors and patterns are designed by suites of genes. They learned that the optix gene controlled the browns in the wings and when removed the wings turn a blue color. The scientists have discovered that when removing genes in a butterfly the wings can be altered and the patterns and colors slightly change.
With this new discovery's the wings of butterfly's will change creating even more beautiful patterns. With this new technology scientists are able to find out how different genes work, which might lead other discoveries. We are also finding out more about how species developed and how they have evolved over time. Who knows maybe one day the public will be able to pick out the colors for butterfly's wings?

Building Up Coral Reefs

Many coral reefs are dying off and researchers want to find a way to keep them thriving for years to come. The researchers are trying to find the few pieces of coral still alive, ones with the best genes, to multiply them. The plan is to take the strong coral to land and grow them in a tank then put the coral in the ocean to multiply creating the strongest possible coral. The researchers have learned the coral reefs are dying off due to the higher heat levels which is due to the increase use of fossil fuels. They are testing the harvested coral in warmer waters and acidic water because that is what the ocean environment has become. Humans have also done harm to the reefs by over fishing and destroying the ecological balance. Scientists are hoping to rebuild the coral reefs as fast as possible because the coral reefs are dying off at a extremely fast rate.
It is important that the coral reefs are kept alive because many sea animals and living things need that environment to survive. We also depend on the coral reefs for a large amount of our sea food. If the coral reefs disappear we will lose one on the worlds natural beauties, which future generations will not be able to enjoy. This needs to be done soon because the coral reefs could die off within the next century.

Algae Covered Lake Erie

An alarming discovery was made last week when 700 miles of Lake Erie was covered with algae. The algae is green, bad smelling, muck on the surface of the lake. Scientists say that blooming algae has been a problem for Lake Erie since the early 2000s. The scientists say the algae is due to the use of fertilizer in the near by farmland. The algae blooms may produce toxins that can cause harm to drinking water and the ecosystem. About 3 million people get their drinking water from the Lake Erie basin, so the water is important. Officials have been testing the water daily to check the toxin levels and they are currently low. However, the blooms are expected become more common and even more toxic as the rainfall patterns change from global warming.
A lot of people live near the lake and many people visit the lakes beaches. So when the lake is covered in algae the surrounding towns lose money due to the reduce of visitors. There needs to be a change in what is used in the farmland because the heavy rainfalls are making the plants nutrients run into the lake. Also, the data that the scientists have collected show that bloom algae will only increase as the years go on.

California Fires Growing With Wind

In Northern Californian wildfires are sweeping across towns and killing many because of dry winds. The winds currently in this area come from the desert in parts of Nevada and Utah and the winds descend into lower elevations. By the winds descending, they become hotter and drier reaching up to and even over 70 miles per hour. This is not good because the fires are still spreading and are not anywhere close to containment. The fires have grown so fast due to the winds that most residents barely had time to escape their homes. Thousands of structures have been burned down and at least 20 people are confirmed dead with hundreds still missing. Some scientists say that the increase in dry winds may also be connected to global warming and the increase in temperature.
With the strong dry winds traveling at such fast speeds, the effects of the wildfires can even be seen in California's Central Valley. At two o'clock on Wednesday our air quality was at the unhealthy status and the sky was hazy and the air smelled of smoke. Our high school cancelled all sporting activities to keep people out of the bad air. So the effects of this fire are widespread and the fight is still not over yet. We will continue to watch and pray as the firefighters battle the large spreading wildfires.

Science Shows Bees Are Attracted to Blue Halos
10/19/17
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/oct/18/flower-nanostructures-optical-trick-attract-bees-pollinators-blue-halo
Researchers have found that the shape of flowers tend to create a ridge on petals that can cast a blueish color light. This effect often can not been seen by humans though, it can be seen by bees. This method might suggest that the optical effect could attract bees to pollinate the flowers. The research team found that the flowers ridges scattered blue and ultraviolet light, creating a "blue halo" effect. Computer models have shown that blue halos that depend not only on the ridges, but on their level of disorder. The team of researchers also did some tests and with artificial flowers and let bumblebees lose on the fake flowers this showed the bees would go to the blue squares and could see optical effects. I can be hard for flowers to make up blue chemical pigments so lots of the flowers have to fake the blue pigments to attract the bees.
This trick is not visible to the human eyes but is a trick on the light that attracts the bees. This might effect our life because more flower producers will try to engineer blue color flowers so that the bees will come to pollinate our flowers. We need bees and pollination to sustain our ecosystem. This is important because bees are slowly dying off and we need to keep up their numbers.

Have you noticed how warm it has been this October? I know I sure have! Weather reserchers have stated that the temperatures are an average of six to seven to degrees higher than normal. Across the United States the average temperature for this month has been in the high 70's which is uncommon for this time of year. Records have been passed in the Bay Area as well as in the Los Angeles area, with temperatures in the low 90's. This hot weather can be attributed to the climate change and the increase of temperature in the environment.
The higher weather I impact many aspects of the way we live. With these transitions between hot and cold weather many people are getting sick and colds. With the warm weather it is making it hard for people to adjust to the fall weather. When the cold weather takes longer to arrive it is making the warm summer weather last for up to four months.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice just announced that Exxon Mobil will pay about $2.5 million in fees for flaring gases among eight plants in the Gulf Coast. The announcement showed that Trump administration is enforcing some of the nation’s environmental laws. The company Exxon will spend about $300 million to install gas recovery, new monitoring and pollution control technologies in Texas and Louisiana. This one settlement is said to reduce the release of organic compounds by 7,000 tons per year. The settlement also requires that Exxon will plant 1 million dollars worth of tress in Texas. It was discovered that during Hurricane Harvey the company was releasing toxic pollutants during the storm which also let out hazardous gases.
With the release of hazardous gases during the hurricane the pollutants could have caused harm to the people in Texas during the storm. So it is to the right of the people that Exxon company was fined for the well beings of the people. The new administration needs to crack down on regulations that harm the environment and make the earth better. I feel it is also good that the administration is making Exxon plant trees because that helps the community as well as the environment.

Gene Therapy to Replace Skin on Dying Boy
11/9/17
Gene therapy was used by doctors in Europe to save the life of a seven year old boy. This type of gene therapy has been used before on burn victims but never on such a large body surface, on the boy nine feet was covered. He had a genetic disease that caused his skin to be destroyed. The disease that the boy has causes his fragile skin to blister and tear as well as being prone to skin cancer. Without this treatment the the boy would have been expected to die but he has now recovered, living a normal life. The doctors took a small sample of the boys skin and they genetically engineered his cells by inserting the form of his mutated gene into his DNA. Overall, the doctors ended up replacing 80% of the boys skin and it was a major success.
With the young boys case front and center others can now see the the positive impact that come from the this type of gene therapy and how others can benefit from it also. It is now known that larger amounts of skin can be covered using gene therapy. However, some concerns have arose from this type of procedure such as dangerous side effects that could lead to cancer.

The U.S. is Drinking Less Soda

A new study shows that the citizens of the United States are reducing their intake of soda. A sample of several thousands was taken and found that soda drinking has decreased, coffee and tea levels have remained steady. There has been an overall increase for every age group in water drinking. The amount of fruit juice has also declined among children which is good because some studies show that fruit juice is linked to obesity. The study from the national health survey showed that the amount of children that drank a sugary beverage daily went down by 9% and the amount of adults that did went down by 11% from 2003. Some of the declines in sugary drinks could be due to the obesity concerns, school lunch improvement and reformulations by some manufactures.
It is really great to see the drinking of sugary drinks has decreased over the past few years. With more people drinking water we are helping to lower obesity. With more studies that are available to the public more people are seeing the negative effects the sugar can have on a persons health.

The Great Salt Lake in Utah is slowly reducing in size. In 1847, to present the water levels in the lake have dropped by about 50%. The lowest level ever recorded of the Great Salt Lake was in 2016. Some reasons found for reduction in the water levels include the increased amounts of use for agriculture. The water use from the last 15 to 20 years has caused the greatest impact on the water levels. Some solutions that researchers have found include carefully analyzing the flow in and out of the lake as well as identifying the sources of decline. The overall objective will be to find a way to maintain the water levels this may be to divert water to other locations.
We need to save bodies of water like the Great Salt Lake because they provide for the surrounding communities. However, with the reduction of water in the lakes other concerns are arising such as dust storms. With the help of water conservation we can all help to save the lakes close to home.

Southern California Wild Fires
12/7/17
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/06/us/california-fires.html
Unfortunately, the rage of the wild fires has not stopped yet for the year 2017. As of Wednesday, there are fives differnt fires being fought in the Los Angles and Ventura Counties. In Ventura County the fires have raged on with out much containment with over 1,200 firefighters on scene. Helping to spread the fires are the dry winds that are blowing down in the area. These winds are known as the Santa Ana winds and are gusting up to 60 miles per hour in places. Many freeways are have been closed due to the growing amount of fires in the area which has created a large amount of traffic in the Los Angeles area. Residents in the hill neighborhoods around the fires have been evacuated and several school districts have canceled school. Over 200,000 people in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties have been told to leave their homes due to the fires.
The effects of these fires are already widespread several hundred structures have burnt down as well as many houses. There are still several large fires in the area burning at no more than 15 percent contained. However, officials have only reported two confirmed deaths so far which is good. But over 50 horses have been found dead from the fires.

Why Florida is Exempt From Drilling?

Trump announced that he had a plan to open up much of the nation's coast to offshore oil drilling. This announcement came as a shock to lawmakers and governors of both parties. The Florida lawmakers strongly oppose the offshore drilling. Somehow, the Florida lawmakers got the Florida coastline exempt from the drilling. For some reason Trumps administration is deemed as valuable to preserve but not California's. This lead to the other states in an uproar because they are being treated unfairly. Other states have now announced that they too will ask the Trump administration for exemption just like Florida. Sierra Weaver a attorney that is with the Southern Environmental Law Center is concerned that the Trump administration does not follow the legal process to omit states from plans made.
With Trump's new drilling plan many people are upset and worry that the drilling could harm the ocean. Also, if Trump allows one state to be omitted from the policy the other sates should have an equal chance or the whole plan needs to be overlooked again.

Despite the record cold temperatures in the Northern United States this type of weather could become extremely rare in the future. The Arctic has warmed over the years and almost twice faster than normal. These cold spells are 15 times rarer than they were a century ago. The colder temps are due to the fact that when the polar winds descend to lower latitudes the cold snaps are warmer.
The effects of global warming are worse that what some scientists had previously thought. The last storm that hit the Northern coast left feet and few of snow along with negative temperatures. These type of storms are rare but with global warming these storms could become the new normal.

After the earthquake that hit off the coast of Alaska earlier this week several tsunami warnings were issued. Tsunami waves can strike land in a matter of minutes. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center, sent out the first alerts within three minuted of the event. The warnings were issued from Alaska all the way up the coast of California however, nothing happened. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake was located in the Gulf of Alaska was about 170 miles from Kodiak Island. With it being centered offshore is no guarantee against destruction.
Some of the most catastrophic earthquakes have occurred under the sea, with most of the deaths and damage caused by water rather than falling buildings or crumbling infrastructure. When parts of a plate get stuck until they break in an earthquake. If this happens under water, then the movement of blocks of rock displaces massive amounts of water, creating a tsunami. So when the alert was sent out it was possible that a tsunami could have hit.

Scientists have discovered that CHIP is one of the biggest discoveries in cardiology since satins. CHIP stands for clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential. CHIP was discovered by several groups of researchers who were not even investigating heart disease. They were looking at the genes of patients who could develop leukemia or schizophrenia. The scientists found a of study participants that had blood cells with mutations linked to leukemia but they did not have the cancer. CHIP is not regularly tested for by doctors but when found it can inform people to regulate their heart conditions.
Researchers have found that if you have CHIP, do your best to control all heart disease risks, like cholesterol and blood pressure, and have a healthy diet and exercise. Drugs may be developed to help stem the inflammation in arteries.

The rocket that was launched into space this week was called the Falcon Heavy produced by the creator of Tesla, the company founded and run by the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. This is the first time that a rocket this powerful has been launched into space by a private company. The rocket carried Mr. Musk’s red Roadster, built by his other company, Tesla. After the rocket took off and about eight minutes later two of the side boosters were able to land back on earth to be reused. With the successful launch of the rocket this could help fulfill Mr. Musk’s dream of sending people to Mars.
This mission is very historic and will help set the base for future space travel. Who knows maybe in the near future people will be able to travel and possibly live on Mars??

Günter Blobel, a man who won the 1999 Nobel Piece Prize for Medicine passed away at the age of 81. He was awarded the prize for discovering that proteins in any living cell have virtual ZIP codes. These ZIP codes help to guide the cell and where they can help regulate body tissues, organs and chemistry. His achievement helped to improve health and discovered a way to help regulate body tissue. Dr. Blobel's achievement helped with a step forward in health.

The North Atlantic Whale is an endangered animal already but this year no newborn whales were found. The entire population only includes 458 animals and several died last year. The reserchers that follow the oceans from Florida to Georgia said they have seen no signs of an newborns. Also, the death rates have drastically declined over the past few years with 17 dying last year. However, sometimes the whales in up in unexpected waters and can be hit by boats or end up in fishing lines.
These animals could soon be extinicted and no longer found in the wild. Hopefully, some North Atlantic newborn whales are found so the population can increase not keep decreasing.

Storms Are Threatening Forests 3/8/18

When the hurricane hit Puerto Rico in September, the island was destroyed. The Hurricane Maria also destroyed trees and nature. With winds up 155 miles per hours the El Yunque National Forest, 28,000 acres, was wrecked. A group of researchers from Columbia University went to the forest to study the effects in the climate. Land that has never been open to sunlight before is now open and changing the environment. They are analyzing how severe storms affect the amount of carbon that forests pull out of the atmosphere and store.
Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events in many parts of the world, the work that is happening will also help researchers understand how forests could be changed permanently as the world continues to warm.

The odds of this happening are basicly impossible. A mother who has a two year old daughter knew something was wrong with her because she could not sit, stand or walk and got constant seizures. However, there were no answers until one afternoon an email popped up. The email suggested that her daughter might have FOXG1. The crazy thing is that the mother has studied that gene for several years and knows how crutial it is to brain development.
